We talk so much about nourishing our own bodies with good food that we sometimes forget that our pets' digestive systems and overall health depend on the nourishing food we give them too! Here's one quick recipe to give your cat a healthy, homemade treat.

Tuna Treats

makes approximately 150-200 treats

1 4-oz can of tuna in water
1/4 cup tuna water (if there's not enough water in the can of tuna, top it up with filtered or tap water to make 1/4 cup)
2 cooked egg whites, chopped
1/4 cup cornmeal
1/2 cup whole wheat or spelt flour

Method:
Place tuna and egg whites in a food processor and pulse to chop fine. Add tuna water and pulse to blend. Add cornmeal and flour and pulse until well combined.

Scrape onto a work table and knead briefly to form a cohesive ball.

Lightly flour your workspace, then roll dough 1/4-inch thick.

Using a pizza cutter, pastry wheel, or large chef's knife, cut the dough into little rectangles approximately 1/2″ x 1/4″ in dimension. Flour your hands, then place all treats on a greased baking sheet and bake in a 350 degree Fahrenheit oven for 15-20 minutes until very lightly browned.

Cool to room temperature, place in an air-tight container, and store either in the refrigerator or the freezer. They will keep well in the fridge for up to 1 week and in the freezer for up to 3 months. Serve at room temperature.

Kids Can Help Too!

If you'd like to make this a fun family activity, let your kids roll out the dough and use dull knives to cut the shapes. As long as the shapes remain small (so your cat can actually chew them) and uniformly thick, the exact shape isn't important.
